3 Shaileshowri Movement for untouchability and temple entrance BS. 2059 - 2063

Under the leadership of EDC Nepal Doti, the Shaileshwari Movement was launched for the first time to oppose widespread caste-based untouchability, discrimination, injustice, oppression, and exploitation of the Dalit community. Hundreds of Dalit community members and various organizations participated in this movement.

Following the Shaileshwari Movement, Dalits have been able to enter the famous Shaileshwari Temple and other temples in the district without discrimination. The impact of this movement, led by EDC Nepal in Doti, was not limited to Doti alone but also had a positive influence on other hilly districts of Sudurpashchim Province.

There has been a significant reduction in caste-based untouchability in public places such as shops, hotels, tea stalls, schools, and other public areas. Positive changes in social attitudes towards the Dalit community—reducing humiliation, discrimination, and oppression—have contributed to an increase in their self-respect.

With the decline in caste-based untouchability, Dalit youths in Doti have increasingly engaged in various businesses, becoming self-employed.
